The What & Why of The 2017 CrossFit Games Open

Registration opens Thursday, January 12th at

The CrossFit Games Open is the first stage of the annual CrossFit Games. Each week for 5 weeks, CrossFit releases a workout, and hundreds of thousands of people around the world complete it and post their scores to the CrossFit Games website.

The Global Individual Competition

Athletes who post the top 15 male and top 15 female overall scores in the Open for each region proceed to Regionals competitions, and the winners at Regionals proceed to the 2017 CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin.

You don’t have to be a crazy-competitive athlete to participate: the Open is for EVERYONE!! There are Rx and Scaled divisions, and the Games website lets you compare yourself to your friends, your enemies, everyone else in your gym, everyone else in your state, your region, or the world. This is a golden opportunity to find out how fit you really are (on a global scale!) It’s exciting, a little terrifying, and will leave you with a great sense of accomplishment. We always see a ton of PRs in the Open!

The Global Team Competition

Each week the top 3 male and top 3 female scores in each CrossFit affiliate contribute to an affiliate team score.  The top 15 affiliate teams in each region after the Open proceed to Regionals competitions, and the winners at Regionals proceed to the 2016 CrossFit Games.

This scoring system means that each and every one of you who register for the Open are a member of Team Virtuosity!

The Virtuosity Intramural

Here at CrossFit Virtuosity, we’ll be running the weekly Open workout for 5 weeks on Fridays beginning Friday, February 26th. If you attend on a Friday, you will do the Open workout regardless of whether you’re officially registered! If you can’t make it on Fridays, we will run make-up sessions on Sundays at 1pm (during a special extended Open Gym.)

Like last year, to make things extra fun, we’ll be running an in-house competition around the five Open workouts! Every Virtuosity athlete will be assigned to a team. Your score each week will count towards your team’s overall standing!

Sounds Like Good, Old-Fashioned Fun, Right?
