What The !@#$% Is This “CrossFit Games” Thing?

The Basics

The CrossFit Games is an annual competition whose stated goal is to find the fittest man and woman on earth. In addition to the individual competition, there is a team competition which pits CrossFit affiliates against one another.

Join Team Virtuosity

If you can complete most of the CrossFit benchmark workouts (Fran, Helen, Cindy, et al.) as Rx’d, we need YOU on our team! There will be no scaling of the Open events, but we expect them to be on par with the benchmarks in terms of difficulty.  If you’re not sure whether you can/should participate, come talk to us and we will tell you!
For the initial “Open” stage of the CrossFit Games, any athlete who registers and participates can score points for their affiliate in the team competition (while simultaneously being scored as an individual competitor.)  Each week the top 3 male and top 3 female scores will count towards our affiliate total.  Since we don’t know what the events will be in advance, we want our team to represent as broad a range of skillsets as possible!
To participate, you will need to:

  • Verify that you can attend the 6 Saturdays of competition (3/19/11-4/23/11.)  CrossFit Virtuosity, CrossFit South Brooklyn, and CrossFit Long Island City will be combining forces to host an event each Saturday at which you can complete the workout and have your result appropriately validated.  If you can’t make all of the Saturdays please come talk to us and we will help you figure out how to complete whichever workout you’re going to miss.
  • Register at games.crossfit.com, and join yourself up to the Virtuosity team at games.crossfit.com/affiliates/crossfit-virtuosity.
  • Register for our local Saturday events at nyccrossfitgamesopen.eventbrite.comThis lets us know you’re coming and allows us to assign you to a heat, have enough equipment on hand for you, etc.  This registration costs $60 which covers the cost of running six events!
  • Get your Team Virtuosity tee/tank to be ready for competition! They’re the lovely turquoise ones you’ve seen us wearing lately.  $20, available at the gym.

Judges, Volunteers, and Spectators!

If you aren’t interested in competing, but are interested in participating as a judge or volunteer, we love you times one million and would adore it if you could help out! If this is you, please indicate what events you will be available for by registering at nyccrossfitgamesopen.eventbrite.com.
We also welcome spectators and cheerleaders — these events are going to be fun and exciting! If you’re planning on attending as a spectator please also register at nyccrossfitgamesopen.eventbrite.com so we can be sure to have space for you!

More About The Games

March-April: The Open
This is the first stage of competition for the Games.  Each Tuesday for 6 weeks, games.crossfit.com will release an Open workout.  Each competitor must complete the workout by Sunday of the week it is released, and submit a result back to games.crossfit.com. Results must be validated by an affiliate, or validated via video (i.e. you must be filmed completing the workout.)
We will be holding an event each Saturday of Open season (3/19-4/23) at 1pm, at which time you will be able to complete the workout and have your result validated by us.  We’re co-hosting events with CrossFit South Brooklyn and CrossFit LIC.  Two events will take place at each affiliate location.  All locations are pretty easy to get to on the subway.
If you can’t make one of more of the Saturday events, please come talk to us about alternative options for completing the workout(s) you’ll be missing!
May-June: Regionals
The top 60 men, top 60 women, and top 30 teams at the conclusion of the Open proceed to the Regionals competition.  This is expected to be held in Albany over a weekend in late May or early June.  Teams will consist of 3 men and 3 women.  The Virtuosity team will be selected by Keith following the Open based upon performance in the Open, desire to participate in the team competition, ability to be a team player, teamwide skill/strength balance, etc.
July: The Games
The top 3 men, top 3 women, and top 3 teams at Regionals will proceed to the Games, which will be held July 29th-31st in Los Angeles, California.

I am interested in performing in the 6 open events, but since my son’s birthday will be on one of those Saturdays I will not be able to attend that one. I was thinking of trying the games this year on a team, to wade into the insanity so to speak. Also a team atmosphere could be a lot of fun and it would make training as you ramp up more fun as well. I do almost all WODs RX and do pretty well on almost all bodyweight oriented WODs (for example Cindy 31 rounds PR & Annie 3:31), but since I’m a light guy (133 lbs) I come up a bit short on max weight movements like 1 rep max D.L. or max BS, etc. I do pretty well, pound for pound, but that’s my deal, and the type of thing that I will need to work on in the future to be really competitive in the Games.
I have always trained alone, but would be open to working out with others.
I did my level 1 at Virtuosity about a year ago as well.
    Regards,

    Hi Anton,
If you’re interested in participating in the Saturday events, please register with us at nyccrossfitgamesopen.eventbrite.com! You will be able to indicate the event you’ll be missing there.
If you want to make up that Saturday we can probably work something out for you on another day that week — please e-mail us to arrange that ([email protected])
    Thanks!

Registered. And pretty sure I’m missing the first Saturday, so plan on a judged make-up next Thursday.
